Why this enclosure

Switss® USB4 M.2 enclosure on a desk, USB-C port and heatsink fins in detail with a loose USB-C cable

Four times faster via USB4 or Thunderbolt 4. Four times faster than a regular USB-C 3.2 Gen 2 enclosure. On a USB4 or Thunderbolt port you get the full speed of a fast NVMe SSD.

A woman transfers video files, laptop with a progress list and a camera on the table

Large files, short waits. Transfer video footage at 40 Gbps, without the long waiting times.

Switss® USB4 M.2 enclosure on a desk, aluminium heatsink fins running the full length

Aluminium cooling with heatsink. The integrated heatsink and thermal pad carry heat away quickly. Your SSD stays at a safe temperature, even during hours of heavy use.

From camera to archive. Your photoshoot is safely on your own SSD within minutes.

Switss® USB4 M.2 enclosure on a desk next to a loose M.2 NVMe SSD

NVMe and SATA in one enclosure. Works with both NVMe and SATA M.2 SSDs. You fit almost any common M.2 SSD.

Switss® USB4 enclosure connected to a laptop on a desk

Also works on USB-C without Thunderbolt. On USB4 and Thunderbolt 3 or 4 you get full speed. On a regular USB-C port the enclosure also works, but at a lower speed.

Cool under any workload

An SSD that overheats slows itself down automatically. The aluminium enclosure with integrated heatsink carries heat away, even during large transfers or long editing sessions.

Frequently asked questions

Does it come with an SSD?

No. The enclosure ships without an SSD. You install your own M.2 NVMe or SATA SSD.

Which M.2 SSDs fit?

The enclosure works with M.2 NVMe and SATA SSDs, M-Key and M+B-Key, in sizes 2230, 2242, 2260 and 2280. Capacities up to 8 TB are supported. M.2 PCIe 5.0 SSDs fit physically, but don't reach that type's full speed over USB4.

Does it also work on a regular USB-C port without Thunderbolt?

Yes. On a USB-C port without USB4 or Thunderbolt, the enclosure works fine, but at a lower speed. You only reach 40 Gbps and 3000 MB per second on a USB4 or Thunderbolt 3/4 port. On USB 3.2 Gen 2 (10 Gbps), the maximum speed is around 1000 MB per second.

How warm does the enclosure get, and is that dangerous?

The aluminium enclosure with integrated heatsink and thermal pad is designed to carry heat away. During intensive use, the enclosure will feel warm, but that's normal and not a sign of a problem. The SSD is actually protected because heat is carried away instead of building up.

How fast is it really, including on my laptop?

The speed you get depends on two things: your SSD and your port. With a fast NVMe SSD on a USB4 or Thunderbolt 4 port, you reach up to 3000 MB per second. On a Thunderbolt 3 port (40 Gbps), the same applies. On USB 3.2 Gen 2 (10 Gbps), the ceiling is around 1000 MB per second. On USB 3.2 Gen 1 (5 Gbps), it's even lower. With a SATA M.2 SSD, the maximum speed is around 500 MB per second, regardless of the port.

My new SSD doesn't show up, what now?

A new or empty SSD needs to be prepared first before it appears as a drive. On Windows, you do this via Disk Management: right-click the unallocated disk, initialize it and create a volume. On macOS, open Disk Utility, select the SSD and choose Erase to format it. After that, it appears as a regular drive.
